Jonathan Dean

August 29, 1986 — November 14, 2022

Jonathan Lyle Dean, 36, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, November 14, 2022 at his home. Born August 29, 1986 in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of Robert Lyle Dean and Pamela Elizabeth Adair Dean.

Jonathan was a member of First North Baptist Church and the Special Lambs Bible Fellowship class. He was also a member of the Terriers team with the Carolina Miracle League. He was a graduate of McCarthy-Teszler School and attended Active Day Adult Day Care, aka: Paula’s House pre-Covid.

Jonathan was diagnosed with MPS1, a rare genetic disorder that affects the entire body with a normal life expectancy of 10 years. With the care of great doctors and the only treatment available at the time, he lived to the age of 36 and brough to his family and those around him great joy.

Along with his parents he is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Adair Dean of Maryland, maternal grandparents, Martha Adair Womick (Steve) of Union, SC, and Jim Adair or Spartanburg, SC; his aunt, Ann Nalley (Steve) of Winston-Salem, NC; and his uncles, Jamie Adair of Woodruff, SC and Glen Dean (Natalie) of Spartanburg, SC. He is predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Wallace and Virginia Dean.

We would like to thank the following people that impacted his life: His doctors, Dr. Dan Wooten, who diagnosed him at age 4 months, Dr. Roger Stevenson who confirmed the diagnosis and found the only treatment available for him. Dr. Bill Krivit, who oversaw his 2 bone marrow transplants and multiple surgeries. Dr. Howard Tiller who oversaw his complicated orthopedic issues and Dr. Anthony Johnson who oversaw his vision care. Dr. Chis Cutshaw who took care of him through Covid and his immediate needs.

His loving teachers, Teshia Hair, Billie Huskey and Bay Broadus made school fun and exciting for him. New Susan Smith, from McCarthy Teszler School for giving him independence with his powerchair.

His Miracle League Coach, Darren McAbee for letting him bat first for 15 years. Paula Guest, Lynn Stroud and Lippy for taking care of him after he graduated. Jonathan had a full, rich, and happy life and made us all better with his determination and inspiration.
