John ("Ragu") Glover Wofford, Jr., age 50, passed away on Friday, April 13, 2018. John was born on April 21, 1967, and grew up in Spartanburg. He attended Dorman High School, was a devoted Carolina Gamecock fan (that may be putting it a bit mildly) and loved to golf. He was adored by his parents, Johnny Glover Wofford, Sr. and Katie Smith Wofford. John cherished his mother and he greatly missed his late father whose guidance he both respected and sometimes challenged. John was not a conformist. He tested any notion or prevalent thought and often stubbornly so. John loved and was so proud of his wife of 23 years, Penny Correll Wofford. Those who knew him knew how deeply Penny was in his heart. He was the very cool "Uncle John" to Christian, Haley, Carey and MacKenzie Dowis and Matthew and Joshua Mahaffey. He was the brother of Christy Wofford Mahaffey and truly liked her husband and his brother-in-law, Kevin Mahaffey. When they were little, John and Christy once peddled cans of beanie weenies to strangers implying (maybe outright saying) they were destitute. That is just one example of some of the mischief John and Christy got into together. John was brilliant, as evidenced by his childhood IQ test, but anyone could quickly discern in conversation with him. He was an avid reader, loved music and playing his drums, sometimes (most of the time) loudly. He was compassionate and generous. He was a loyal friend. He loved all animals but especially his kitty, Houser (named after the guitarist Michael Houser), who he said was the greatest of all time kitty. She would follow him around like a puppy. He was hilariously witty. When around John, you would laugh. He made sure of it, effortlessly. He liked to party and have a good time and sometimes to excess but John was not one to do anything half way. He was all in and that is how he approached life. He lived and loved big. John thought deeply, made some mistakes and had some struggles but above all was the most uniquely wonderful soul. His time here was too short for the many who loved him. He made a mark on our hearts that will never fade. A memorial service celebrating John's life will be held at 3:45 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 2018, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E.
