John King Williams, Sr., 89, of Spartanburg, SC died Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born January 23, 1933, in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late John Lafayette and Leila King Williams.
A US Army veteran, Mr. Williams earned his bachelor’s degree from Wofford College, Class of 1959 and was a 50-year club member. He was retired from Norfolk Southern Railway. Mr. Williams was a member of Central United Methodist Church, a former chairman of the Board of Trustees, served on the Buildings Committee, was a coordinator of the Central Adult program for Centralites, served on the board for the Salvation Army, and served as a mentor with the Citizen’s Scholar Program of the Spartanburg County Foundation.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Diggs Williams, his son, John King Williams Jr. (Jill) of Greer, SC, three grandchildren, Jackson Williams, Jarrett Williams and Caroline Williams, special niece, Rebecca Diggs Barnes (Bobby) of Huntsville, AL, along with several other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers and six sisters.
Visitation will be at 12:30 – 1:30 pm Saturday, October 22, 2022 at Central United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 233 N. Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306. A Memorial service will be at 2:00 pm at the church, conducted by The Rev. Cameron Y. Treece and The Rev. Luther Rickenbaker.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Leila King Williams and John Lafeyette Williams Scholarship Fund c/o Wofford College, 429 North Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303 or to Central United Methodist Church.
