John Carl Waters, 81, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, April 11, 2016 at his home after a brief illness. Born June 1, 1934, in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Leroy Waters and Nellie Ruth Powell Waters. He was the devoted husband of Katherine Hood Waters for over 60 years. Mr. Waters retired from Powdercraft Corporation after 41 years and was the owner of Waters Machine Sales. John graduated from Spartanburg High School, served in the United States Army, and held membership in the Beaumont Lodge #376. His church family for 81 years was Beaumont United Methodist Church where he was a Boy Scout. John loved to fish and found joy in the simple pleasures of life like taking nature walks with his grandchildren, and talking cars and golf with his sons-in-law and recently even grand-son-in-law. He never tired of sitting through endless dance recitals and competitions for his daughters and his eyes sparkled when he shared a dance with their mom and the love of his life, Katherine. Known kindly as "Uncle John" to numerous nieces and nephews, he was a friend to all. Surviving, in addition to his wife Katherine Waters of the home, are two daughters, Dr. Karen Waters Thomas (David) of Woodruff, SC, and Rev. Kelli Waters Taylor (Richard) of Fayetteville, NC; grandchildren, Kristen Thomas Lambert (Michael) of Charlotte, NC, Joey Richard "Tripp" Taylor, III, John Whitten Banks Taylor, and John Luke Taylor of Fayetteville, NC. Also surviving are sisters, Betty Jean Cudd of Mayo, SC and Nancy Lee Lowe (Maurice) of Chesnee, SC. He was predeceased by sister, Peggy Ruth Waters of the home; and brother-in-law, R.C. Cudd of Mayo, SC. Visitation will be 11:30 AM - 12:45 PM Thursday, April 14, 2016, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St,, Spartanburg, SC. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 PM, at the Chapel, with the Reverends Kelli W. Taylor and Darrell McNeill officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
