Lt. Col. (Ret.) John Wayne Mathis "J. W.", 77, of Savannah, GA, died Monday, September 18, 2017. Born March 14, 1940, in Cherokee County, SC, he was the son of the late Jessie J. and Viola Splawn Mathis and husband of the late Jane O'Neal Mathis. A U. S. Army veteran, John was Program Manager during Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he was responsible for 27 projects valued at $347 million dollars. As a result of his leadership and technical capabilities, millions of people will have more reliable electricity for years to come. He served as a civilian employee of the U. S. State Department in Karbala, Iraq from 2009-2011. He was employed with the Army Corps of Engineers and was of the Presbyterian faith. Survivors include his brothers, Raymond Mathis (Ruth) of Boiling Springs, SC and Carl Mathis (Virginia) of Inman, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by brothers, William Mathis and Gerald Mathis. Visitation will be 1:00-1:45 PM Monday, September 25, 2017, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM, at the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Michael Stepp. Burial, with military rites, will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
