John "Nolen" Tinsley, passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2023, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He was born on January 28, 1969, in Augsburg, Germany., while his father was serving in the US Army and stationed there.
John worked for many years with his dad and grandfather at their family company, Tinsley Truck and Car Sales. After his father’s retirement, John became a manager of Advance Auto Parts and then SecurCare Self Storage, where he was well-respected by his colleagues and admired for his strong work ethic. Through his professionalism and leadership skills, John made a lasting impact on the companies he served.
Education played an important role in John's life. He was a proud graduate of Spartanburg High School and attended Spartanburg Methodist College. One of John's proudest accomplishments was being a Boy Scout and eventually becoming an Eagle Scout of Troop 114 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Brotherhood Order of the Arrow. His commitment to the organization was unwavering as he earned the esteemed God and Country Award. These experiences shaped him into the remarkable individual he became.
In addition to his dedication to scouting, John held athletic prowess as he broke and held numerous records with the Sports Aquatics Team, including the prestigious Spartanburg City Swim Team. His competitive spirit and determination were evident in every stroke he took. He broke several city records and held those new records for several years. John was a beloved family man and known for his kind heart. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
As we bid farewell to John "Nolen" Tinsley, we celebrate the memories he leaves behind. A beloved brother, Jeffrey Anderson Tinsley formed an unbreakable bond with John until his passing in 2018.
John is survived by his loving parents, Douglas Nolen Tinsley and Sarah Martha Anderson; his devoted wife, Stacy Pope Tinsley; his cherished twin children, John Matthew Tinsley and Lauren Denise Tinsley; stepchildren, Megan Lopez (Emilio), Morganne Nelson, and Shelby Shuler; his adored grandchildren, Brayden Nelson, Gabriel Lopez, and Madilynn Ramsey; and his bonus son, Andrew Thompson. He is also survived by his niece Odessa Tinsley, nephew Oryan Tinsley, and sister-in-law Perry Harvey Tinsley. John also leaves behind his beloved animals.
John will forever be remembered for his genuine kindness, unwavering faith, and selflessness. His love and care for his family were a beacon of light that brought joy to their lives. Whether through shared laughter or warm embraces, John made sure to leave an indelible mark on the hearts of those he held dear.
To honor John "Nolen" Tinsley's memory and celebrate his life, the family will receive friends on July 30th, 2023, from 2:00 PM to 2:45 PM at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel located at 2075 E Main St in Spartanburg, SC. A funeral service immediately follows the visitation at 3:00 PM in the Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spartanburg Humane Society, 150 Dexter Rd, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
