John Strickland

April 23, 1925 — July 24, 2010

John Garvin Strickland, 85, of Canaan Road, died Saturday, July 24, 2010 at his home. Born April 23, 1925 in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Albert Hoyle and Mamie Lou Nichols Strickland and husband of the late Sarah Lou Johnson Strickland. He worked for many years with J.D. Hines Construction and retired from Spartan Petroleum. He was a charter member and former deacon of Beaver Hills Baptist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Vicki Arthur, Diane Deaton and husband Norman and Kathy Pettit and husband David all of Roebuck; a predeceased daughter Linda S. Finley; a grandson, Robbie Deaton of Spartanburg; four granddaughters, Missy Willard of Roebuck, Brook Quinn of Clover, Amanda Bettencourt of Moore, and Merideth Gaffney of Duncan; a special niece, Brenda Layton of Roebuck; seven great grandchildren, Zane and Creed Willard, Matthew and Sarah Deaton, Kaiden and Drake Quinn, and Andrew Bettencourt. He was predeceased by four brothers, Homer, Warnell, Cheeve and Bookter Strickland; and a sister Annie Mae Holder. The family wishes to express special thanks to caregivers, Mary Ellen Singleton and Doris Keller. Visitation will be 5:00-5:45 P.M. Monday, July 26, 2010 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 6:00 P.M. at the chapel, conducted by the Rev. David High and the Rev. Manning Strickland. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beaver Hills Baptist Church, 3700 South Church Street Ext., Roebuck, SC 29376. The family is at the home of his daughter, Diane Deaton, 180 Laynewood Drive, Roebuck.
