John Michael Romine, 47, of Spartanburg, died Friday, April 26, 2013, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. He was born July 2, 1965, at Fort Sill Army Hospital in Lawton, OK. John is survived by his parents, Peggy and Ron Romine of Spartanburg; a sister, Anne Sherry (Tom), Asheville, NC; a brother, Matt (Lori), Denver, CO; three nephews; one niece; and numerous cousins. John attended Spartanburg High School, Winthrop University, and USC Upstate. His many friends knew him as an outgoing, gregarious, and sweet-natured guy who at one time loved biking (riding in the "Assault on Mt. Mitchell"), extolling the virtues of natural health foods and, when they were in their prime years, attending "Grateful Dead" concerts. John was a great lover of all types of music. John Romine would literally "give you the shirt off his back", a trait that did not always serve him well. But, he could also drive a person to distraction trying to obtain agreement on the virtues of his favorite political candidates, the newest health food, or the Atlanta Braves. He worked in various restaurants over the years and, at one time, had his own business, "Clean Air Cures", which sold purifying and filtered water systems. John had a passion for life, which manifested itself in social issues almost always on the side of the "little guy" and a suspicion of "government." As word of John's death has been circulating, the most frequent words heard to describe him are "smart", "witty", "funny", "great guy", "generous", "made us laugh". He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. John fought a long (since age 13) and ultimately losing battle with Type I diabetes. Memorials may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312 or to SRMC Hospice Special Needs Fund, 120 Heywood Avenue, Suite 300, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
