John Wilford Petty, 96, formerly of Pacolet, SC, died Thursday, January 14, 2010, at Wesley Commons in Greenwood, SC. Born February 17, 1913, in Pacolet, SC, he was the son of the late John Lawson and Daisy Fannie Crow Petty and the husband of the late Ophelia Katherine Covil Petty. He was a retired stonemason, carpenter and electrician who, along with his father and brothers, built the entrance and tower at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in 1939. He was also retired from Kohler Company where he was the first employee hired in the plant. Mr. Petty was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and a member of Pacolet United Methodist Church where he had served as superintendent of the Sunday School and as a Sunday School teacher. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Dorothy Petty of Spartanburg; a brother-in-law, Cecil C. Covil and his wife Yvonne of Greenwood; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Visitation will be 10:00-10:45 a.m. Saturday, January 16, 2010, at Floyd's Pacolet Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel conducted by the Rev. Patricia McCain and the Rev. Jimmy Dillard. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
