John Morrow

John Amick "Johnny" Morrow, 69, of Spartanburg, SC, died Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at his home. Born November 29, 1943, in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late John Jones and Reba Amick Morrow. A resident of White Stone, he was also a graduate of Pacolet High School, Spartanburg Methodist College and Limestone College. He did graduate work at the University of South Carolina Upstate and Converse College. He taught U. S. History and Government at Pacolet and Jonesville High Schools. Summers, early in his career, were spent as a lifeguard at area swimming pools. By the age of 21, he had earned the distinction as the youngest head football and basketball coach in the State. For 10 years, his work continued as a teacher, administrator, and coach. Among his players was Jim Youngblood, who played in the NFL for more than 10 years. For the remainder of his career, Johnny was transportation and safety coordinator for the State Department of Education in eight Upstate counties including Spartanburg. He trained and led safety seminars for student drivers before becoming magistrate, holding court at Chesnee, Cowpens, and filling in at the county jail. Judge Morrow spent 33 years in education before becoming a judge and five years as a county and city magistrate before retiring. Most recently he served as Municipal Judge for the City of Cowpens. Johnny participated in the Read Across America Day and administered the Readers Oath to students at Cowpens Elementary. He made guest appearances in Fifth Grade classrooms to share about his career and to emphasize the importance of continuing to build reading skills and remain in school. He was also a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and served in the Army National Guard. Survivors include his son, Joshua J. Morrow (Anne-Marie) of Inman, SC; two grandchildren, Nataleigh and Zoeigh; a brother, Jones Thomas "Tommy" Morrow of Spartanburg, SC; longtime friend, Donna Hall; and his special canine best friend, Rocky. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 PM Sunday, April 28, 2013, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Monday, April 29, 2013, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 626 Norwood St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, by the Rev. Dr. Stephen A. Holler and the Rev. Sherry Wood. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Wateree River Youthful Offender Intensification Program (YOIP), PO Box 189, Rembert, SC 29128-0189; or Spartanburg Humane Society, 150 Dexter Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303. The family is at the home of his son, Josh Morrow, 416 Pisgah Lane, Inman, SC 29349.
