John Marshall West

January 11, 1952 – March 25, 2024

John Marshall West passed away on March 25, 2024 at Portside at Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach, SC following a long illness.  He was born January 11, 1952 in Spartanburg, SC to John E. and Frances M. West.  He was predeceased by his parents.  He is survived by his wife, Marlene, his sister Jane Williams (John), brother-in-law Frank Thomas, sister-in-law Debbie Thomas, and nieces and nephews.

After graduation from Spartanburg High School in 1970, John joined the US Air Force and was stationed at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. Following an honorable discharge, he returned to Spartanburg.  After careers at Arrow Automotive and Master Machine Works, he retired at the age of 61. He and Marlene were able to travel and enjoyed trips to Paris, the Kentucky Derby and the Daytona 500.

John enjoyed NASCAR, Notre Dame and USC Gamecock football.  He also dearly loved his basset hound, Sir Duke, whose ashes are being laid to rest with him.

In August 2023, he and Marlene moved to Myrtle Beach to be near John’s sister.  Marlene will continue to reside in Memory Care at Portside.

A Celebration of Life will be held April 2, 2024, at 11:00 at Floyd Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood Glendale Road, Spartanburg. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45 at the Chapel. 

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and thanks to the caregivers of Portside and Agape Hospice. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Morningside Baptist Church, 897 South Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC   29302.
