John Curtis Hayes, Sr., 86, of Spartanburg, SC, died Sunday, October 25, 2015, at Summit Hills-Spartanburg. Born August 20, 1929, in Pauline, SC, he was the son of the late Grover Cleveland Hayes and Clevia Quincy Ann Lancaster Hayes and husband of the late Betty Jean Petty Hayes. A Pauline High School graduate and U. S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict era, Mr. Hayes retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company after 40 plus years of service. He was a member and deacon at Morningside Baptist Church, a member of the Royal Sunday School Class, and former member and deacon at Cedar Spring Baptist Church. John was an avid Ham Radio Operator and member of the Spartanburg Amateur Radio Club. He was also Fire Commissioner at Croft Fire District, a member of the Spartanburg Spinners Dance Club, Croft Ruritan Club, the Telephone Pioneers of America, and the Pinckney District Chapter of the South Carolina Genealogical Society. Survivors include his brother, Frank Preston Hayes of Pauline, SC; children, John C. Hayes, Jr. (Dale) of Northern Greenville County, SC, Don Hayes (Denise) of Aiken, SC, and Janice H. Holliday (Dr. Joseph) of Greenville, SC; grandchildren, Clare H. Barnes (Will), J. Hayes Holliday (Katelyn), Lt. John L. Holliday, DDS, DC, U. S. Navy, Abbie H. Jordan (Caleb), and Davis Hayes; great-grandchildren, Ada Barnes, Ellie Barnes, and Hayes Holliday, Jr.; special niece, Christy Young (Fred); special friend, Judy Jones; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by brothers and sisters, W. C. "Willie" Hayes, Rembert Wesley Hayes, Hugh Alvin Hayes, Percy Paul Hayes, James Dennis Hayes, Lucian Leroy Hayes, Ellen Elizabeth Hayes, Clevia Lancaster Crow, Ray Aubrey Hayes, Grover Carl "G. C." Hayes, and Robert Eugene Hayes. Visitation will be 12:30-1:30 PM Thursday, October 29, 2015, at Morningside Baptist Church Welcome Center. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM, at the church, conducted by the Rev. Chris Kurtz. Burial will be in Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery, 3119 Hwy 56, Pauline, SC 29374. Pallbearers are Frank A. Hayes, Philip Hayes, Gary Hayes, Mack Hembree, Donald Bishop, Nate Crosby, and Eddie Crow. Honorary escort will be provided by members of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
