John Pierce Goodwin, Sr.

Mr. John Pierce Goodwin, Sr., 97, a lifelong resident of Spartanburg, SC, passed away peacefully in the presence of family on Monday, November 18th at Spartanburg Medical Center.

John was the son of the late Roy Earle Goodwin, Sr. and Ethel Ailene Hudson Goodwin. He was the beloved husband of the late Marjorie Eva Reid Goodwin for nearly 70 years. 

He was a 1945 graduate of Spartanburg High School and the co-owner of R. E. Goodwin Auto Parts for 50+ years. Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin joined Second Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg, SC following their 1948 marriage. They raised their three children in Christian faith: John Pierce Goodwin, Jr., Elizabeth Ann "Beth" Goodwin (1952-1958), and Kathy Lea Goodwin Allen. 

John was a man of God who loved and cared for his family and friends. His faith carried him through many trying times, during which he remained steadfast and unwavering. His legacy lives in the hearts of those who were blessed to have his guidance during his incredibly full life. He will forever be missed.

In addition to his parents, young daughter, and wife, John was predeceased by his older siblings Roy Earle Goodwin, Jr. and Margaret Goodwin Seay; and nephew Robert Wayne "Bobby" Seay. He is survived by his children John Pierce Goodwin, Jr. (Jayne Batchelor) and Kathy Lea Goodwin Allen (Dale); his grandchildren Catherine Goodwin Bakema (Sean), Reid Pierce Goodwin, and Lea Elizabeth Allen Harrison (Hal); his great grandchildren Jameson Pierce Goodwin and Everly Cole Goodwin; his nephew Howard Earle “Buddy” Seay (Benni), and his great-niece Margaret Rose Seay Moore (Randy). 

Graveside services will be held Saturday, November 23rd at 12:00 noon at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg, SC. Family will receive friends following the service.
