Joe Boyd Burgess, 88, of Spartanburg, SC died Sunday, January 24, 2021. Born May 6, 1932 in Gaston County, NC he was the son of the late John M and Doris Reid Burgess and husband of the late Sarah Cannon Burgess. A U.S. Army Veteran having served in the Korean Conflict, Mr. Burgess was a 1952 graduate of Spartanburg High School and attended Clemson University. He was a retired Tool & Dye Designer with Square D and IBM. An avid golfer and historian, he worked on the Reid family genealogy and updated a pamphlet about the history of Mt. Dearborn Arsenal in Chester, SC. Mr. Burgess was a follower of the Messiah of Israel-Yeshua the Christ and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He loved sweets! Survivors include his children, Beth Drennen (Lowry), John Burgess (Gina), Robert Burgess (Pam), and Laurie Burgess; eight grandchildren; three great-granddaughters, and siblings, John M. Burgess, Lynda Salditt, and Raymond Burgess. He was predeceased by siblings, William Burgess and Sara Romney. Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, January 28, 2021 in West Oakwood Cemetery, 195 Oakwood Avenue, Spartanburg, SC 29301, conducted by Mr. Lowry Drennen. Visitation will be at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 626 Norwood Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
