Joe Blanton

Joseph "Joe" Herbert Blanton, 93, of Spartanburg, SC, died Thursday, October 1, 2015, at Spartanburg Medical Center. Born September 21, 1922, in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Henry A. and Mattie Cannon Blanton, and the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was married to the late Betty Brotherton Blanton for 65 years. Mr. Blanton was a veteran of the U. S. Army Signal Corps serving in China and India. He was the retired founder of Blanton Insurers, past president of The Breakfast Optimist Club, coached Little League for many years, and was the past president of the Spartanburg Independent Insurance Association. He was an active member of Mountain View Baptist Church, of the Wesleyan faith, and loved being a part of numerous church and senior citizen activities. Surviving are his children, Joseph H. Blanton II, and Michael L. Blanton (Deborah), all of Spartanburg, SC, Dr. Phillip G. Blanton (Anna), and Marilyn B. Lane (Jeff), all of Asheville, NC; eight grandchildren, Todd Blanton (Lisa), Ryan Blanton (Melanie), Jared Blanton (Maggie), Justin Blanton (Amy), Jody Blanton (Jordan), Elise Blanton, Juliana Blanton, and Jennifer Lane; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by brothers and sisters, Alfred Blanton, Mary Ann Israel, Esther Israel, Clint Blanton, Bertha Pittman, Boyd Blanton, Carl Blanton, Ralph Blanton, and John Blanton. Visitation will be 1:30-2:45 PM Sunday, October 4, 2015, at Mountain View Baptist Church, 5555 Parris Bridge Rd., Boiling Springs, SC 29316. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM, at the church, conducted by the Rev. Tyler Kirby and Mr. Blanton's grandson, Mr. Justin Blanton. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304. The family is at the home of Michael Blanton.
