Jimmy S. Poole, 82, passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home after several months of declining health. Born in Gaffney, SC on May 10, 1940, he was the son of the late Shuford Miles Poole and Gertrude McCraw Poole. He was a graduate of Gaffney High School. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who enjoyed following and supporting his children and grandchildren in their education, performances, and sports activities.
Mr. Poole’s career was in the cotton business. He began working as a cotton salesman, then continued in cotton purchasing at Spartan Mills, and finally opened his own cotton brokerage company, Poole Cotton Company, LLC. He served as president of the Greenville Cotton Exchange from 2009-2010. He was a member of Morningside Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and a member of the ACTS Sunday School Class.
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Janice McCraw Poole; three children, Eric Poole (Susan) of Charlotte, NC, Cindy Poole Benson (Mark) of Raleigh, NC, and Heather Elane Poole of Spartanburg, SC; six grandchildren, Emily, Carson, and Collin Poole of Charlotte, Natalie Dickman of Raleigh, Elizabeth and Cate Schwendimann of Spartanburg; one sister, Mary Ann Poole Clary, of Gaffney; and a large number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert Miles Poole, Edgar M. Poole, Sr., Charles E. Poole, John T. Poole, and sisters, Hazel Poole Goudelock, Delia Poole White, and Jacqueline Poole Herlong.
At the time of his death, Mr. Poole resided at Summit Hills Memory Care in Spartanburg. The family expresses gratitude to the administrative staff and to his nurses and caregivers. The family also expresses special thanks to Hospice Home of Spartanburg.
Funeral service will be held at Morningside Baptist Church, 897 S. Pine Street, Spartanburg, at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 23, 2023 followed by a visitation reception in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Morningside Baptist Church.
