Jewel May Smith Shotwell, 90, of Spartanburg, passed away Monday, December 20, 2010 at RoseCrest Retirement Community. Born January 7, 1920 in Vance County, Henderson, NC, she was the daughter of the late Irby Dowd and Ila Jewel May Smith, both of Vance County, Henderson, NC. She attended Louisburg College, Louisburg, NC. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Spartanburg since 1966, where she served as Sunday School teacher, on the Board of Ladies First Thursday, and many other committees. She was very involved in starting the Christian Women's Club of Spartanburg and traveled as a speaker. Survivors include her husband of 67 years, James Taylor Shotwell; a daughter, Edith Shotwell Reeves (Darrell) of North Charleston, SC, two sons-in law, Sid Lane of Ashland, VA and Arthur Connolly of Spartanburg, SC, a daughter-in-law, Sandy Shotwell of Spartanburg, SC, a brother, Thomas Dowd Smith (Holly) of Fort Myers, FL, ten grandchildren, Artie Connolly (Patricia) and Andy Connolly (Mindy) of Spartanburg, SC, Amy Connolly Ramella (Ron) of Inman, SC, Jon Lane of Atlanta, GA, Gray Lane (Kayla) of Boston, MA, Kristin Shotwell Shelton (John) of Columbia, SC, Lorri Shotwell Ford (Scot) of Charlotte, NC, Jimmy Shotwell (Alice) of Memphis, TN, Rey Reeves (Kandace) of Goose Creek, SC, and Matthew Reeves (Heather) of North Charleston, SC, ten great-grandchildren; two nephews, Joshua and Christopher Smith of Columbia, MD; and a sister-in-law Peggy Shotwell Hollis of Spartanburg, SC. She was predeceased by two daughters, Jewel Shotwell Lane and Ann Shotwell Connolly, and a son, Dr. James Taylor Shotwell, Jr. Visitation will be 1:00-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Robert C. Morgan, the Rev. Bill Adams, and the Rev. Sal Barone. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service, P.O.
