Jesse Parris

June 28, 1923 — January 4, 2011

Jesse Willard Parris, 87, of Spartanburg, died Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born June 28, 1923 in Chesnee, he was the son of the late John Wadus Parris and Martha Stancil Coveney. Mr. Parris was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he was a former dedicated Sunday School Teacher and Deacon. He retired from Milliken & Co., Drayton and New Prospect Plants after 45 years of service, and was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Ellwanda Scruggs Parris; a daughter, Ingrid (Bob) Calhoun of Boiling Springs; two sons, Cary (Kathy) Parris of Woodruff and Dale (Pat) Parris of Stafford, VA; a sister, Kathryn Rape of Chesnee; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Wanda Reaves; five sisters; two brothers; and one grandchild. Visitation will be 3:00-3:45 p.m. Friday, January 7, 2011 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 p.m. at the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Scott Linnerud and the Rev. Doug Turner. Burial, with Military Honors, will be in Springhill Memorial Gardens, Chesnee. Pallbearers are Ricky Parris, Johnny Ray Parris, Tommy Scruggs, Greg Cash, Shawn Scruggs, and Cary Parris. Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, 577 North Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303 or First Baptist North Spartanburg Youth Building Fund, 8740 Asheville Hwy, Spartanburg, SC 29316.
