Jesse Cleveland

October 6, 1950 — February 24, 2011

Jesse Patterson Cleveland passed away at his family's farm in Spartanburg, South Carolina on February 24, 2011. Born in Spartanburg on October 6, 1950 to the late Giles Patterson and Ginevra Marxmiller Cleveland, Jesse spent most of his life growing up between Spartanburg, SC and San Diego, California. From swimming in the lakes of North Carolina to surfing the Pacific, from road trips in Costa Rica, his adventures in Hawaii, to fishing in the Lowcountry, the sun and sea were common threads throughout his life. Jesse graduated from Cal Western in San Diego in 1972, with a dual degree in Art and Psychology before returning to Spartanburg. Jesse's artistic nature was apparent in everything he did. From rebuilding old houses to shaping beautiful surfboards to painting and drawing: he loved the company of his friends, the open road, the ‘right' aloha shirt, old cars and a good taco joint. His own interest in music and cooking led him to one project that is remembered fondly still by so many- Dawg Gone was one of Spartanburg's coolest bars and music venues in the late 80s. Jesse was considered a patron of the music scene and was a friend to many. His warmth, spirit of generosity, and distinctive individuality will be sorely missed. He is survived by his brother, Dexter Alden Cleveland, and sister-in-law, Lea Ann Niblett Cleveland; his sister, Donna Lewis Cleveland, and her children, Jessica Michaele Hundhausen and Herman (Hank) Henry Hundhausen III. The Reverend Ned Morris and the Reverend Clay Turner will officiate a memorial service at The Episcopal Church of the Advent at 4 p.m., Tuesday, March 1, 2011. Following the service there will be a gathering at the Hub Bub Showroom, 149 S. Daniel Morgan Ave. Later this summer, family and friends in San Diego will gather for a memorial near the ocean.
