Jesse Charles

Jesse Franklin Charles, 94, of Spartanburg, SC, died Sunday, February 21, 2021 at Spartanburg Medical Center-Mary Black Campus. Born September 6, 1926 in Campobello, SC he was the son of the late James Franklin and Ellen McArthur Charles and husband of the late Ruth Poole Charles and Frances Bessent Wimberly Charles. A U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, Mr. Charles was a retired vice president of Mini Mart Food Stores and worked with Oates Oil Company for 39 years. He loved to garden and do yard work. Mr. Charles was a Master Mason with Glendale Lodge #271 AFM and a member of Wildlife Action. Survivors include his sons, Ricky W. Charles (Beth) of Spartanburg, SC and Timothy R. Charles (Kelly) of Redondo Beach, CA; grandchildren, Jason Charles (Rosa) Yuma, AZ, and Jeremy Charles (Laura) of Spartanburg, SC; great-grandchildren, Josephine Charles, Ashley Charles and Mia Charles; three great-great-grandchildren, stepsons, J. Bradley Bessent (Mitzi) and Kenneth M. Bassent (Dale); sister, Julia Charles Hammett of Spartanburg, SC and extended family members. He was predeceased by brothers, Lewis A. Charles and Robert O. Charles. Cryptside services with military rites will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, February 25, 2021 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Complex, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29306 conducted by The Rev. Joanne Hull. Visitation will follow the service at cryptside. Masks and social distancing are required especially during visitation.
