Jeffrey Holmes

June 17, 1942 — December 5, 2021

Jeffrey Norman Holmes died at his home on Sunday, December 5, 2021. He was born on June 17, 1942, in Trenton, New Jersey, the eldest son of Norman Woodrow and Vivian Rosenwald Holmes. Although he grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, his parents moved to Greenville, Mississippi when Jeffrey was in high school, and he graduated from Greenville High School. He spent two years at the University of Mississippi and transferred to Millsaps College, from which he graduated with a degree in chemistry in 1964. His professional career was spent in the metal finishing industry in Ohio, New Hampshire, Delaware, Taiwan, and South Carolina. He spent the past 45 years living in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Ann Valencia Bowman Holmes, as well as his daughter, Stephanie Holmes Burton, her husband Brian, and four grandchildren, Patrick, James, Audrey Claire, and Allison Burton. Also surviving Jeffrey is his brother, Gary Holmes, and his wife Judy of Vicksburg, Mississippi and two nephews, Joey Holmes, and Kevin Holmes. He will also be missed by his four-legged children, Sasha, a standard poodle, and Tigger, a Bengal cat.

Jeffrey belonged to the Spartanburg Gun Club where he was an avid skeet shooter. He and his standard poodles loved dove hunting. He spent many hours restoring British sports cars, including Delilah, his favorite, an Austin Healey Sprite, and he belonged to the British Car Club. He had fun punishing the opposition at duplicate and party bridge. He was an avid traveler; he and Ann traveled throughout Asia, and he particularly loved Paris. His family will miss his ability to fix most anything, including cars, plumbing, appliances, and furniture. Mostly, they will miss him.

The family will celebrate the life of Jeffrey and receive friends on Sunday, December 12, 2021, from 2:00-5:00 p.m., at the home of Brian and Stephanie Burton in Spartanburg (178 South Fairview Ave).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be to the Spartanburg Humane Society.
