Janet Louise Pruitt, 86, of Spartanburg SC, passed away January 29th, 2024, peacefully in her sleep in the early morning with family by her side. Although, most people knew her as Jan, Granny Jan, the fudge lady, interplanet Janet, the galaxy girl or as the unofficial mayor of White Oaks, all would say they loved her for her amazing fun-loving attitude towards life. All knew she suffered from terminal optimism, and it was highly contagious. She was born to the late John Simone and Louise Contarino, March 30th, 1937, in Rockford, Illinois. Janet graduated from Harlem High School in Loves Park, IL in 1955, and graduated with a master’s in computer science at Rockford College. She had an amazing fudge business called Granny Jan’s Homemade Fudge, in which she sold her fudge at endless fairs and markets across the Bay Area in California for about 20 years, and when she moved to South Carolina in 2012 she carried on that work here. For all the thousands of people from all over the world who have enjoyed her sweet treats for decades, Granny Jan will truly be missed. She was married to the late James Desmond Pruitt, Jr. in the late 80’s, they lived together in Benicia, CA, a small Nantucket town in the Bay Area. Jan loved life and all it had to offer, she enjoyed music, loved singing in the church choir, and played the accordion for many years, she also loved art and had painted many beautiful canvases, she loved traveling and visiting new places as long as she could get there by car only, she was an active member in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in the South Carolina temple, she was also member of the Spartanburg Newcomers and Red Hats, she was obsessed with playing card games and board games, especially hosting the games at her apartment with all her friends, of course she was a huge football fan and loved the San Francisco 49ers, the night before her passing we had a football party for her, with all her local family, to watch the 49ers play for the NFC championship, when they won, she said, “Woohoo! Oh Boy!” We will be celebrating Jan’s life on February 17th from 1pm to 3pm at the Spartanburg LDS church’s cultural hall at 121 Quail Dr., Spartanburg SC 29302.
