Janet Marie Simmons Alverson, 79, of Spartanburg, SC, died Sunday, January 9, 2022 at Brookstone Terrace of Woodruff. Born December 7, 1942 in Lexington, TN, she was the daughter of the late Paul Edwin and Sue Johnson Simmons.
A graduate of Decatur High School, Decatur, GA, and Kellers Beauty School in Spartanburg. She was a hairdresser in Atlanta, GA for over 50 years.
She was a member of Decatur Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School for several years.
After retiring, she moved to New Smyrna Beach, FL. For the years she was in Florida, she took or paid for 30 dozen eggs each week for the Methodist Church Food Bank. She was known as the egg lady. She would have spent her last dollar buying animal food. She loved cats. Her most happy times were digging in the yard. She had “Yard of the Month” so many times that she asked not to be considered anymore.
Janet loved the outdoors, hiking, skiing, anything nature.
Due to declining health, she moved to Arbours West Lane in Moore.
Survivors include her sister, Linda Simmons Bishop of Roebuck, cousins, Brenda Simmons Hayes (Ted) of Woodruff, Janice Waddell (Tim) of Fort Mill, SC. Special friends, Lois Williams, Randy Spector and Richie Stahman of New Smyrna Beach, FL. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her special brother-in-law who she loved, David Bishop.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Patrick Schultz, Emily Grote, Nathan Howle, and their wonderful, caring staff at Brookstone Terrace in Woodruff.
Visitation will be 1:00 – 1:45 pm Thursday, January 13, 2022 at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. A Funeral service will be at 2:00 pm at the chapel, conducted by The Rev. Dr. Tim Williams.
We ask that friends and family wear masks and keep social distancing.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brookstone Terrace, 80 Medical Drive, Woodruff, SC 29388 or to Roebuck Baptist Church, P.O. Box 49, Roebuck, SC 29376.
