Jane Tate

November 13, 1936 — November 5, 2013

Jane Johnston Tate, 76, of Spartanburg, SC, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, after a courageous battle with cancer. Jane was born November 13, 1936 and raised in Cabarrus County, NC. She attended local schools, and later moved to Atlanta, GA. In Atlanta, she met and married the love of her life, David Edward Tate, in 1963. After her husband's tour in Vietnam, the family relocated to Spartanburg, SC in 1966. From 1972 onward, she served as a sage, vigilant comptroller for Tate Metalworks. In the interim, Jane stayed busy raising three spirited boys. In addition to home and work, Jane was active in a variety of community activities. She was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon. She served the Cub Scouts as well, and had the distinction of being South Carolina's first female Cubmaster. Working with the Boy Scouts, her service and leadership roles were honored with the Silver Beaver Award. She also served as a Board member for the Boys and Girls Club of Spartanburg and enjoyed the Margaret Moore Garden Club. Last but not least, Jane was an avid follower of Spartanburg High School Sports, cheering on her sons' various Viking teams. Jane's prime area of interest was family, always. Jane was predeceased by her parents, Mason S. and Mary B. Johnston, and her brother, Edgar L. Johnston. Jane is survived by her husband of 49 years, David E. Tate; her three sons, David E. Tate, Jr., MD of Louisville, KY, Grant M. Tate (Becky Powers Tate) of Spartanburg, SC, and Brian D. Tate (Jeannie Seegars Tate), also of Spartanburg; grandchildren, David E. Tate, III, Elizabeth S. Tate, and Katherine M. Tate of Louisville, KY, Evelyn M. Tate and Jane Maron Tate, and Abby C. Moss and Joshua S. Moss, all of Spartanburg, SC; and her sister, Mary Elizabeth Baugh of Newton, NC. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, November 7, 2013, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday, November 8, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church, 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, by the Rev. Dr. Tom Evans, the Rev. Dr. William L. Arthur, and the Rev. Joanne Hull. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
