Jane Pollitzer

April 23, 1931 — May 7, 2011

Catherine Jane Winn Pollitzer, 80, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2011, while living at Eden Terrace. Born April 23, 1931, in Greenville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Henry John Winn, Sr. and Anna Kate Fewell Winn. She graduated from her beloved Converse College in 1953, having made many life-long friends. She was the College Representative 91-93; served on the Board of Directors and as Corresponding Secretary of Georgia Cleveland Home; member and past treasurer of Spartanburg County Medical Auxiliary; past member of Fleur-de-lis Garden Club, Junior League of Spartanburg, Debutante Club, and Bridge Club Number One and Number Two; and a longtime volunteer for Mobile Meals. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Jane was a generous, kind, fun-loving, and witty person, which endeared her greatly to her many friends, family, and especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed a full life playing tennis and trying to beat every opponent that walked on the court with her; traveling to Caesar's Head, her mountain home closest to Heaven; and treating her entire family to an annual beach getaway at Pawleys Island where bingo was a hot game in which prizes selected by her were treasured; and talent shows among the grandchildren, which became a much anticipated highlight for the family. Jane is happily reunited with her adoring and loving husband of 49 years, the late Richard Sprott Pollitzer, MD. She is survived by her children, Catherine Pollitzer Groome and husband Chip, Mary Pollitzer Stewart, and Laura Pollitzer Freeman and husband Matt; grandchildren: Mary Catherine, Christie, and Hunter Groome, Finley and Mary DuBose Stewart, Caroline and Catherine Freeman. A Celebration of Life memorial service will be 3:00 PM Tuesday, May 10, 2011, in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. David A. Renwick and the Rev. Dr. William L. Arthur. Visitation and a reception will follow the service in the Church Parlor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice Special Needs Fund, 120 Heywood Avenue, Suite 300, Spartanburg, SC 29303; Mobile Meals Service, P.O. Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304; or to Converse College, 580 E. Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302. The family is eternally grateful to the caregivers, Anna Ezell, who has been with the family 53 years, and Betty Garrett. Both have given loving support and devotion to Jane and her daughters. The family is also grateful to Brenda Scruggs who was able to accompany Jane on trips to Lake Burton, GA and recently to Hilton Head. The family is at the home.
