James "Jim" Hyatt

October 9, 1928 — August 12, 2021

James Thomas Hyatt, (US Army, Ret. Chaplain Major) 92, of Greenville, SC died Thursday, August 12, 2021. Born October 9, 1928 in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late Walter Thomas and Clara Watson Hyatt, Jim is survived by his wife Jodie Aarons Hyatt.

Mr. Hyatt earned his Bachelor’s of Art degree from Bob Jones University, then served in the U.S. Military where he served as a Chaplain and retired as a Major. During his 20 years in the military, he served four years in the U.S. Navy and 16 years in the U.S. Army, having served in WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Jim went on to work for the Greenville Defense System, and then with the Greenville County School District. He was a member of Independent Baptist Church.

Survivors include his children, Robert J. Hyatt (Terri) of Lugoff, SC, Leah Beth Hyatt of Greenville, SC, Eva Mariah Hyatt of Boone, NC, his granddaughter, Cari Rae Hyatt, and his sisters, Sarah H. Willard and Etta H. Tipton of Spartanburg, SC, and brother, Paul Hyatt of Spartanburg, SC. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Elizabeth Caccavale and Dorothy Kuiper.

Graveside service with Military Rites will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 16, 2021 in Sunset Memorial Park, 1955 Cannons Campground Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307, conducted by The Rev. John Cox.
