James Upton

James Henry Upton, 88, of 2185 Upton Road, died Monday, March 1, 2010, at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born April 2, 1921, in Cherokee County, SC, he was the son of the late Claude and Rothey Mathis Upton. He was retired from the textile industry and was a member of Eastside Baptist Church. He was a former member of Central Baptist Church of Cowpens where he was a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He loved to sing and play the guitar at prayer meetings and on the radio. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Ruby Lee Cowart Upton; two daughters, Jeanette Childress and her husband Carson, and Barbara Burrell, all of Spartanburg; two sons, Carroll Upton and his wife Mary of Buffalo, and Rev. Jimmy Upton and his wife Miriam of Marion, NC; nine grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a grandson, three sisters, and four brothers, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 2010, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Upton. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family is at the home, 2185 Upton Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307. A special thank you to his loving daughters, Barbara and Jeanette, for taking care of him during his illness.
