James William Turnage, of Spartanburg, SC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. Born on January 10, 1927, in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late, James Cody Turnage and Mary Turnage Allison.
A distinguished veteran, James served honorably in the Merchant Marine during World War II and later in the Navy during the Korean War.
James is survived by his sons, Scott Turnage of Casey, SC, and Greg Turnage (Leslie) of Tryon, SC; and his daughter, Nela Loflin (Ronnie) of Tryon, SC; grandfather to Jennifer Voelp (Tim), Christopher Schultz, Harrison Turnage (Bethanie), Amanda Carter (Patrick), and cherished his seven great-grandchildren. James also had a special friendship with Mary Mills, which added joy to his life.
He was a lifelong active member of Second Presbyterian Church, where he dedicated over 50 years as a Sunday School teacher and held the title of Elder Emeritus. His faith and commitment to service within the church community were among his proudest accomplishments.
James was a true gentleman who had a passion for life. He found pleasure in simple joys like working in the yard, enjoying his Jelly Belly jellybeans, and cheering on his favorite team, the Clemson Tigers.
James was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Joan Dobbins Turnage; granddaughter, Josie Turnage, and daughter-in-law, Denise Turnage.
Family will receive friends, 11:30 - 12:15PM, Tuesday, April 15, 2025, followed by a funeral service at 12:30 PM, to be held at Second Presbyterian Church, 438 N Church St. Spartanburg, SC 29303. Services will be conducted by The Rev. Hudson Neely. The burial will be held privately by the family.
