James Snead

October 23, 1928 — November 23, 2017

Dr. James "Jim" Gibson Snead, Junior passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, November 23, 2017. Born in Pickens County on October 23, 1928, he was the son of the late James Gibson and Mamie Elizabeth Southerland Snead. Jim graduated Easley High School and honorably served in the US Navy. He attended the University of South Carolina as a proud Gamecock. It was there he received his degree in Pharmacy and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Doctor of Pharmacy by the SC Pharmaceutical Association. Dr. Snead began his career with Craft's Drug Stores and then became owner of Ligon's Drug Store in downtown Spartanburg. After serving the community as a pharmacist for over 50 years, Dr. Snead retired from Eckerd Drugs. He was a Lifetime Member of the SC Pharmacy Association. Jim always greeted his customers by name, with his sweet smile and a kind word. Jim Snead served his community with integrity and grace his entire life. He became a member of St. James Methodist Church in 1958. He served his church as a Trustee, member of the Council of Ministries and Institutional Representative for Scouting for Troop 28. Jim was a Freemason, a Hejaz Shriner and a member of the Jaycees and Sertoma Clubs. As a Jaycee, he was co-chairman of the committee to eradicate Polio in Spartanburg County. He helped to organize and was the first president of the Woodland Heights Neighborhood Association and was a School Board Trustee for Spartanburg School District Six for 10 years. The University of South Carolina was one of Jim's true joys. He was a member of the Lambda Chi Fraternity and the USC Alumni Association. He thoroughly enjoyed watching his Gamecocks play and was named a Legendary Fan at Williams-Brice Stadium in November of 2011. Jim's greatest service in life was to his family. Jim was married to his sweetheart, Ira Jones Snead, for over 61 years. They loved to see the world and traveled extensively to 6 of the 7 continents. Together they had two sons, James Warren Snead (Cindy) of Lake Bowen and Joel Gibson Snead (Jackie) of Greenville. In addition, they were blessed with two grandsons, James "Jamey" Morgan Snead (Mary Kathryn) and Reece Gibson Snead, who stole their Poppie's heart and he loved spoiling them daily. Jim was predeceased by two brothers, William Reed and Samuel Arthur Snead. The family will receive friends from 2:00-2:45 on Sunday, November 26, 2017, at St. James United Methodist Church. Services for Jim will follow at 3:00 PM, conducted by the Rev. J. Wayne Smith, Jr. and the Rev. Dr. John A. Jones. A private committal service will be held on Monday, November 27, 2017. Without the kindness and care of Comfort Keepers and Medi-Home Hospice, it would not have been possible for Jim to remain at home with Ira, where he was happiest. Memorials may be made to St. James United Methodist Church, 213 North Lanford Road, Spartanburg, SC 29301 The family is at the home.
