James Franklin Sloan Jr., 80, of Spartanburg, passed away Friday, February 17, 2023, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born May 24, 1942, in Union, SC, he was the son of the late James F. Sloan Sr. and Ella Mae Sloan.
Mr. Sloan was a graduate of Union High School, earned an undergraduate degree from Wofford College and a master’s degree in Education from the University of South Carolina. He was a devoted school Administrator at Spartanburg District 6 for 29 years, including 24 years as the Principal of Pauline Glenn Springs Elementary School. He developed strong educational programs, and his leadership was centered on a theme of ‘Where Dreams Begin’. He was especially proud of the inspiring team of teachers that led Pauline Glenn Springs Elementary to be the school of choice in the community.
Mr. Sloan was an active member of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church and volunteered at Mobile Meals of Spartanburg. He served on the Board of Directors for the first Charter School program as well as mentoring students with academic potential through the Citizens Scholar Program of Spartanburg County.
In retirement years, Jim enjoyed traveling, connecting with family and friends, playing golf, and lunching with the “Romeos”. He always looked forward to down time with his dogs, Buddy and Henry.
Jim was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who created special memories during holidays and family gatherings. Survivors in addition to his wife of 27 years, Dorothy, are a daughter, Penni Conn and two sons, Willian (Bill) Conn and James (Jay) F. Sloan III and wife, Christine; three grandchildren, Reed Conn, Kathryn Conn, and Parker Sloan; one great grandchild, Noah Conn.
Burial will be beside his beloved late wife, Kathryn Myers Sloan. A celebration of Jim's life will be held in early April.
