James Shotwell

James Taylor "Red" Shotwell, 94, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, September 1, 2014, at White Oak Estates-Spartanburg. Born June 19, 1920, in Henderson, NC, he was the son of the late George Baker and Ellen Shanks Shotwell, and husband of the late Jewel May Smith Shotwell. A U. S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Shotwell retired from Milliken & Company after 43 years of service. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Spartanburg where he was a deacon, a member of the Finance Committee, and a Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of the General Arbitration of New York City Board and received his BS Degree from North Carolina State University. Mr. Shotwell was many things to the world but to folks who knew him he was a loving, kind, gentle man. He was a Christian who lived a Christian walk with whoever he came in contact with. Survivors include a daughter, Edith Shotwell Reeves (R. Darrell) of N. Charleston, SC; sons-in-law, Sidney J. Lane of Ashland, VA, and Arthur F. Connolly of Spartanburg, SC; daughter-in-law, Sandra K. Shotwell of Spartanburg, SC; 10 grandchildren; 9 grandchildren-in-law; 12 great-grandchildren; and sister, Peggy Shotwell Hollis of Spartanburg, SC. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by daughters, Jewel Ellen Shotwell Lane and Elizabeth Ann Shotwell Connolly; and a son, Dr. James T. Shotwell, Jr. Visitation will be 10:00-10:45 AM Friday, September 5, 2014, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM, at the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Robert C. Morgan. Burial with military rites will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304; or Dedication Evangelism, Inc., PO Box 10, Towaco, NJ 07082.
