James Lawrence Scruggs, of Spartanburg, died on Friday, January 18, 2013. Born December 17, 1924, in Chesnee, SC, he was the son of the late Vance and Rachel Davis Scruggs. A veteran of the U. S. Navy, Mr. Scruggs served in World War II on the USS Wisconsin. He was a member of Beaumont Baptist Church, the Men's Bible Class, former Sunday School teacher and deacon. He was a former member of Brooklyn Baptist Church. He owned and operated a service station and rental properties for a number of years. Survivors include his beloved wife of 63 years, Virginia Buff Scruggs; daughter, Ann Scruggs Miller (Michael) of Seneca, SC; granddaughter, Anna Miller Robinson (Kevin) of Tamassee, SC; sister, Faye S. Brown (Ballard) of Spartanburg, SC; and brothers, Everett L. Scruggs (Faye) and Ray K. Scruggs (Martha), all of Chesnee, SC. He was predeceased by brothers, Robert E. Scruggs, Cleatus A. Scruggs, C. Eugene Scruggs, John A. Scruggs, Vance Scruggs Jr., Ralph C. Scruggs; and an infant sister, Ellen Naomi Scruggs. Visitation will be 2:00-2:45 PM Sunday, January 20, 2013, at Beaumont Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM, at the church, conducted by the Rev. Steven McLain, the Rev. John Cox, and the Rev. Rupert Guest. Burial with military rites by the SC State Guard Honors Team will be in Springhill Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Beaumont Baptist Church, 945 Beaumont Avenue, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
