James Pitts

September 27, 1936 — December 23, 2011

James William "Bill" Pitts, 75, of Moore, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, December 23, 2011. He was born in Abbeville County and raised in the Hickory Tavern Community of Laurens County, a community he loved deeply. He was a graduate of Hickory Tavern School and attended Erskine College in Due West, SC. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Fort Jackson and Germany. Bill was deeply loved by his family and friends. He was a man of great faith. He loved his country and honored all those who have fought and served for this nation. Bill is survived by his wife of 52, years, Julia "Judy" Gail Abercrombie Pitts; one daughter, Kendra Ellen Pitts of Moore; sisters, Linda Pitts McDaniel of Greenville and Dorothy Pitts Drennon and her husband Dennis Mullikin of Anderson; brother-in-law, John Scott George of Greenville; one sister-in-law and her husband, Wandetta and James J. Travis of Greenville; many loving nieces and nephews; close family friend, Ron Argo; and his faithful beagle, Frey. Bill is predeceased by his parents, Clyde and Eva Pitts; one sister, Jewell Pitts George; his mother-in-law, Margorie Carver Abercrombie; one brother-in-law, Layton Bryce Abercrombie; and two nephews, Michael and Jeffrey George. Memorial services will be held Friday, December 30, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Cash. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. The family wishes to express special thanks to Dr. Steven Corso, a man Bill greatly admired; his staff of angels and Interim Healthcare Hospice for the care and comfort provided to Bill. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The V Foundation for Cancer Research, 106 Towerview Court, Cary, NC 27513 or The Cancer Association of Spartanburg & Cherokee Counties, 295 East main Street, Suite 100, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
