James Mattison

James Robert "Jimmy" Mattison, Sr., 68, died Monday, January 11, 2021, at Spartanburg Medical Center. He was born August 31, 1952 in Spartanburg, SC, a son to the late James Willard and Frances Blackwood Mattison. Jimmy was a 1970 graduate of Dorman High School, attended Hayne Baptist Church, and later joined Mountain View Baptist Church. His career included working with NASCAR teams, Bud Moore Engineering, and drivers, Bobby Allison, Dale Earnhart, Mario Rossi and Ricky Rudd. He also worked for Southern Railway, Seay's Peach Farm, and other jobs using his talents as a mechanic. Racing was not only a career, but a lifetime interest and passion. He enjoyed his children and grandchildren as many of them continued the family tradition of racing sports. Surviving are his children, James R. Mattison, Jr., Marvin Andrew Mattison (Crystal) and Julie Seay Mattison.; grandchildren, Cole, Neeley, Joseph, Piper and Cruz Mattison, Malachi Brooks, and Warren and Zane Bishop; and a sister, Ann Mattison Bogan (Al) of Rock Hill, SC. Graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 14, 2021, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307, conducted by the Rev. Billy Rice.
