James Key

March 3, 1917 — February 28, 2013

James H. Key, of Spartanburg, loving father, husband, and Christian, died on Thursday, February 28, 2013, at his home. Born March 3, 1917, in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Angus Fraziar and Cora Alleen Vaughn Key and husband of Margie G. Key. He was previously married to the late Francis Steadman Key. Mr. Key was retired from Texize, Mauldin, SC, was a certified underwater welder who worked at the Charleston Naval Yard and in Oak Ridge, TN during World War II, helping to develop the atomic bomb. He was raised at Connie Maxwell Children's Home, was a member of Westview Independent Church, an ordained deacon, Sunday School teacher, and usher. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Sallie Key Lemmons (David) of Greer, SC, and Teresa Gossett of Spartanburg, SC; son, James "Jim" Nelson Key of Spartanburg, SC; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Edith Key Dobbins; and brothers, Harold F. Key and Lewis E. Key. Visitation will be 7:00-9:00 PM Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by the Rev. Stephen Johnson and the Rev. Howard Smith. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Connie Maxwell Children's Home, PO Box 1178, Greenwood, SC 29648; or Interim Hospice, 155 Deacon Tiller Court, Duncan, SC 29334.
