James Tate

James "Jimmy" Ryan Tate, 75, of Spartanburg, died Monday, April 9, 2012, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born July 18, 1936, in the State Line Community of Cherokee County, he was the son of the late William Boyd and Beulah Harris Tate. Mr. Tate was a U. S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, served on the USS Bremerton, and was a member of American Legion Post #28. He was the owner of Tate Appliance Service and a member of Morningside Baptist Church where he was also a member of the Royal Sunday School Class. Jimmy was a former member of Ben Avon Baptist Church for over 40 years and he served many years as the church sound technician. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Boyd Tate; daughters, Connie Tate Cubitt and husband Ben of Suwanee, GA, and Lisa Tate Moore and husband Billy of Boiling Springs; four grandchildren, Kalle Ryan Cubitt, Benjamin Aaron Cubitt, Heather Leigh-Ann Moore, and Thomas Boyd Cubitt; brothers and sisters, Harry Lee Tate of Greer, Aileen Gallman of Gaffney, Wilma Peeler of Gaffney, Joe Dean Tate of Oklahoma, and Roger Eugene Tate of Goucher; sister-in-law, Joan Boyd Adair; brother-in-law, Bill Adair; and a large number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Miles Donald Tate and Williams Pittman Tate; plus two infant siblings. Visitation will be 10:00-10:45 AM Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM, in the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dr. James Hilton, Chaplain Cindy Adair Inman, the Rev. Dr. John Boyd Adair, and the Rev. Bill (Nathan) Adair. Burial, with military honors, will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Honorary escorts are American Legion Post #28 and members of the Royal Sunday School Class. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Legion Post #28, PO Box 391, Spartanburg, SC 29304; or the Alzheimer's Association of the Upstate, 301 University Ridge, Suite 5000, Greenville, SC 29601.
