James Ira "Pop" Smith, 89, of 439 Monks Grove Church Road, died Monday, September 7, 2009, at his home. Born September 7, 1920, in Arcadia, SC, he was the son of the late William Claude and Bertha Gregg Smith and the husband of Dorothy Gowan Smith. He was retired from the United States Navy and was a member and Superintendent of Sunday School at Hope Free Will Baptist Church. Also surviving are his daughters, Deborah, Marie, Mary, and Brenda, all of California; his step-sons, James R. Netherton of Spartanburg, and Eddie Netherton of Howenwald, TN; his step-daughter, Kathy Otts of Spartanburg; 9 step-grandchildren; 18 step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one step-grandchild. The family will receive friends from 5:00-5:45 p.m. Friday, September 11, 2009, at Hope Free Will Baptist Church. A memorial service with military rites by the SC State Guard Honors Team will follow at 6:00 p.m. at the Church conducted by the Rev. Monte Guffey, the Rev. Kenneth Cash, and Mr. Joe Scruggs. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hope Free Will Baptist Church, P. O. Box 1044, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
