James Prescott Hartell, 43, of Spartanburg, SC, died Sunday, March 15, 2015. Born May 6, 1971, in Charlotte, NC, Jim graduated from Myers Park High School and received a Bachelor of Arts in Communications, Master of Arts in Teaching, and was pursuing a Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of South Carolina. Jim moved to Spartanburg in 1994 to open "The Tavern at Town Square" with local businessman Pano Stathakis. Jim met his wife Holly Waters, a Converse graduate, and Spartanburg native, at the restaurant. Jim, a National Board Certified Teacher, taught History and Social Studies at Spartanburg High School since 2005, where he was an involved member of the faculty. Jim participated in the Youth in Government Program and looked forward to accompanying the Spartanburg High School student delegation to the State House in Columbia each year. Jim worshipped at Bethel United Methodist Church and served the local youth sports leagues in various capacities. Jim loved the outdoors and frequently led family camping and fishing excursions to State Parks in the region. Jim and his children also loved to explore the woods around his Spartanburg County home. Jim is survived by his wife, Holly; son, "JP" James Prescott, Jr.; daughter, Sarah Marie; his parents, George and Linda Hartell; two brothers, Steve and his wife Holly Hartell and Matt and his wife Kerrianne Hartell; parents-in-law, J. B. and Sarah Anne Waters; brother-in-law and wife, Frank and Martha Waters and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Saturday, March 28, 2015, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 245 S. Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29306, by the Rev. David Nichols and the Rev. Steven Rhodes. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the service.
