James Gilbert

James F. "Candyman" Gilbert, 75, of Cowpens, SC, died Wednesday, October 8, 2014, at Spartanburg Medical Center. Born May 21, 1939, in Harris, NC, he was the son of the late George Conrad Gilbert and Lillian Oliver Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert was a member of Central Baptist Church in Cowpens where he served as a deacon. He was a retired barber and loved to golf. Surviving is his beloved wife of 56 years, Mrs. Blanche Gilbert; daughter, Tina Gilbert of San Francisco, CA; son, Donnie Gilbert (Tammy) of Boiling Springs, SC; god-son, Matthew Harrell (Kyhlie) of Spartanburg, SC; granddaughters, Jamie Edwards (Jonathon) and Brittany Gilbert; great-grandsons, Gavin Lee Edwards and looking forward to the birth this month of Hudson Edwards; brother, Alton Dewitt Gilbert, Sr. (Barbara); special friends, Duran "Porky" Holt and his wife Paula, and Jackie Martinez; and adopted family friend, Don Saylor, who served on the "Mighty Moo" USS Cowpens during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by five brothers, Jerry Gilbert, Joe Gilbert, Eugene Gilbert, Warden Gilbert, and Dexter Gilbert. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Friday, October 10, 2014, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, October 11, 2014, at Central Baptist Church, 126 E. Church St., Cowpens, SC, by the Rev. Allen Blanton, the Rev. Joseph McGaha, the Rev. Jason Metcalf, and the Rev. Andrew Flippo. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, 1955 Cannons Campground Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Memorials may be made to the Children's Playground Fund at Central Baptist Church, PO Box 310, Cowpens, SC 29330. The family is at the home of Mrs. Blanche Gilbert.
