James Gibson

James Ronald Gibson, 87, of Spartanburg, SC, died Saturday, June 17, 2017 at his home in Leicester, NC. Born March 9, 1930, in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late James Franklin Gibson and Alberta Ball Squire. A U. S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Gibson was awarded the Letter of Commendation, Good Conduct Medal, Japanese Occupation Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, U. S. Korean Campaign Medal and Ribbon with five Engagement Stars, Republic of Korea Service Ribbon and Medal, and Korean Government Presidential Unit Commendation Medal. James was employed for 41 years by Norfolk Southern Railroad Company as a car inspector in Hayne Yard and car repair foreman in Hayne Shop in Spartanburg, SC. He was a longtime member of Fairforest Baptist Church as well as charter member and assistant chief of Westview-Fairforest Fire and Rescue. Survivors include his wife, Joanna Holzinger of Spartanburg, SC; son, James William Gibson of Spartanburg, SC; grandchildren, Matthew James Hammett (Chloe) of Solon, OH, Sara Jordan Hammett and Christopher James Gibson , both of Spartanburg, SC; and great-grandchildren, Joshua Hammett, Tristan Hammett, and Sophie Hammett. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Amanda Smith Gibson; and daughter, Elizabeth Gibson Hammett. Visitation will be 10:00-11:15 AM Saturday, June 24, 2017, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 AM, at the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gary Hensley. Burial, with military rites, will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
