James Franklin

James "Jim" Franklin, 81, of Spartanburg, SC, died Friday, August 8, 2014, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born November 9, 1932, in Columbia, SC, he was the son of the late John Raymond Franklin and Vernease Goude Franklin Abbott. Mr. Franklin retired as a letter carrier from the U. S. Post Office and was formerly employed with Southern Railway. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School. A graduate of Spartanburg High School, he served in the U. S. Army Reserves for 25 years and was a volunteer for Mobile Meals Service. Surviving is his cherished wife of 60 years, Mrs. Ann Franklin; children, John Franklin (Rhonda) of Rutherfordton, NC, and Beth Browning (Robert) of Moore, SC; grandchildren, Evan Franklin, Tyler Franklin, Bradley Browning, and Bailey Browning; and a step-sister, Gertrude Haynes of Columbia, SC. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, James Harold "Jimmy" Franklin, Jr.; sister, Norma Jean Cubitt; and step-brothers, Rudy Abbott and Clarence Abbott. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday, August 10, 2014, at St. James United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Dr. Gareth Scott and the Rev. C. E. "Smoke" Kanipe, Jr. Visitation will follow the services at the church. Memorials may be made to St. James United Methodist Church, 213 Lanford Road, Spartanburg, SC 29301.
