James Parris

James Edward Parris, 83, of Spartanburg, SC, passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2016, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born August 18, 1932, in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late Clarence G. and Alma Lavender Parris and husband of the late Elise McCraw Parris. A 1950 graduate of Gaffney High School, 1952 graduate of Spartanburg Junior College, and 1954 graduate of Wofford College, Mr. Parris played baseball and basketball during his college career. He was a U. S. Army veteran and was retired from Michelin. For many years he was also employed with White Bag Company, Union Camp, and Harley Bag Company. James was a longtime member of Bethany Baptist Church, an avid fisherman, bowler, and Atlanta Braves fan. Survivors include his son, Michael L. Parris (Sherry) of Pauline, SC; grandson, Jeffery W. Parris (Katie) of Moore, SC; brother, Verland Parris of Spartanburg, SC; sisters-in-law, Maggie Lou McCraw and Ruby E. Knight, both of Spartanburg, SC; niece, Tracy Williams; nephews, Bill McCraw and Thomas W. Earley II; grand-niece, Dawn Williams; and grand-nephews, Benjamin McCraw, Charlie McCraw, and Thomas W. "Trey" Earley III. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a sister-in-law, Geraldine L. Parris. Visitation will be 3:00-3:45 PM Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 PM, at the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Allen Elder and the Rev. Glenn Rusher. Burial, with military rites by the U. S. Army Honors Team, will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Visitation will also follow at the graveside.
