James Lee "Cubby" Culbertson, 91, of Inman, SC, died Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at Hospice House of Catawba Valley, Sherrills Ford, NC. Born January 27, 1921, in Pacolet, SC, he was husband of the late Margaret Barbour Hughston Culbertson, and son of the late Mamie Lee Stephenson and Shelton Young Culbertson. Mr. Culbertson was a U. S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, a banker with Citizen and Southern National Bank for 40 years, and a member of Inman First Baptist Church. He was a member and past president of Inman Rotary Club, a member of American Legion Post 45-Inman, and retired from Inman Volunteer Fire Department. Also, a member of the 319th Bomb Group Retirees Association, he served with the 319th Bomb Group 440th Squadron from Sardinia & Corsica, flew 21 missions in a B-26 Marauder, was shot down over Mantva, Italy October 19, 1944 and was in German Prison Camp Stalag Luft 4 until the end of the war. The camp was liberated by the British Army late in April 1945. On April 17, 2012, Mr. Culbertson participated in an Honor Flight with other World War II veterans to the World War II Memorial in Washington DC. Surviving are his daughter, Barbara Cutchin and husband Dennis of Mooresville, NC; grandchildren, Steven Craft and wife Alycia of Los Angeles, CA, and Susan Brown and husband Kevin of Mooresville, NC; and great-grandsons, David Smith of Mooresville, NC, and Wesley James Craft of Los Angeles, CA. He was predeceased by brothers, Shelton Y. Culbertson Jr., N. B. McPherson Sr., and Albert McPherson. Visitation will be 10:00-10:45 AM Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM, in the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Paul G. Moore. Burial, with military rites by the SC State Guard Honors Team, will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
