James E. Chapman, 77, of 281 Point Circle, died Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Palmetto Baptist Hospital in Columbia, SC. Born July 3, 1931, in Spartanburg County, SC, he was a longtime resident of Spartanburg until retiring to Prosperity in 1988. He was a son of the late Dallas Edward and Montague Wall Chapman and retired from Hoechst-Celanese Corporation after 17 years of service. He was a member of Chapin Baptist Church in Chapin, SC, and active with the Friends of Jesus Ministry. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. Survivors include his wife, Ethel Adams Chapman; a son, Bruce Chapman and Tammy Miller of Kannapolis, NC; a granddaughter, Hannah Nichole Miller; a grandson, Patric Hollar; two sisters, Sara Chapman Ramsey of Boiling Springs, SC, and Ruth Chapman Hayes of Spartanburg; four brothers, Marvin Chapman and Henry Chapman of Spartanburg, Ned Chapman of Enoree, SC, and Vance Chapman of Gaffney, SC. He was predeceased by a sister, Annie Chapman Johnson; and two brothers, B. F. Chapman and Rufus Chapman. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, April 20, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Kelly and the Rev. Phillip Vaughn.
