James "Jim" Cary Brantley, 91, of Spartanburg, died Sunday, July 29, 2012. Born April 24, 1921, in Scotland Neck, NC, he was the son of the late George Linwood and Pearl Marks Brantley. Mr. Brantley was a very kind and loving person. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II in the North Africa campaign and received a Purple Heart and a Battle Star medal. He retired from Keenan Transport Company with over 40 years of service and was a member of Powell Presbyterian Church. Jim lost his first wife of 57 years, Lib Brantley, in 1999. He is survived by one daughter, Jean Shuler and husband Bernie of Sumter, SC; and two grandchildren, Tres Shuler (Michelle) and Kriste Shuler (Eric Sipes); three great-grandchildren; and a half-sister, Audrey Heath of Wilmington, NC. In 2007 he lost his beloved wife, Dorothy Norton Brantley, whom he was married to for five years. Surviving are four stepdaughters, Brenda McLellan (Mack), Wanda Dill (Dean), Betty Sue Bishop (Dennis), and Judy Painter (Ray); eight step-grandchildren, Scott and Tami Morris, Alton and Natalie McLellan, Marty and April Bishop, Matt and Ashley Bishop, Rich and Kelly Painter, Zac and Sarah Painter, Dean and Tonya Dill, and Aaron and Windy Hodge; and 17 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 1, 2012, at Powell Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. Joe Geddes. Visitation will follow at the church. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Complex at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Powell Presbyterian Church, 119 County Road, Spartanburg, SC 29301.
