James Macfie Anderson Jr, of Southern Oaks Assisted Living 120 Roper Mt Road Extension, Greenville, SC died Tuesday, April 21, 2015. A native of Columbia, he was the son of the late J. Macfie Anderson Sr, former mayor of Columbia, and Ruth Kerr Anderson. Mr. Anderson attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where he received the Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1951. Upon his graduation, he was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the US Air Force Reserves as a Captain. Mr. Anderson was affiliated with Ruff Hardware Company for 26 years having served as president for 13 years. He remained active in the hardware and building supplies industry. He was an active member of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, South Carolina Retail Council, and the Hardware Association of the Carolinas. Mr. Anderson was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church from 1954 to 1994 where he served as a Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Teacher, and president of the Men of the Church. In 1994, he became a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg, SC. For forty years Mr. Anderson was a member of the Columbia Rotary Club and was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a life member of the Evening Music Club of which he served as president, a member of the South Caroliniana Society, and a member of the Historic Columbia Foundation. Mr. Anderson was also a charter member of the St. Andrews Society of Columbia as well as a member of the Forest Lake Club and the Camellia Ball. Survivors include a son, James Macfie Anderson III, of Atlanta, Georgia; a daughter, Dr. Christine Broughton Anderson, of Berea, Kentucky, and a sister, Mary Frances Anderson Wendt, of Columbia, South Carolina. He is predeceased by his wife, Sara Blake Mazyck, and a sister, Ruth Anderson Jonhston. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, April 24, 2015, in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, conducted by the Rev. Joanne Hull. Visitation will follow in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 901 South Pine St., Spartanburg, SC 29302.
