Jack Combs

Jack Eller Combs, 85, of Mayo, SC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at his home, after a courageous fight following several years of declining health and some devastating health related challenges. Born May 11, 1931, in Cove Creek, NC, he was the son of the late John Pickney Combs and Etta Suzanne Eller Combs. He was the last surviving child of his immediate family. Jack graduated from Cove Creek High School in Boone, NC, Appalachian State University, and received a Master's Degree from Converse College. He served in the U. S. Air Force as Airman First Class during the Korean Conflict. A member of First Baptist Church of Spartanburg and the New Boys Sunday School Class, Jack taught First Grade Sunday School for 27 years and assisted with the original television ministry. Recently, he attended Buck Creek Baptist Church and Mayo First Baptist Church. Jack taught and coached four years in Rutherford County Schools at Chase High School and Caroleen Elementary School. He taught at West End Elementary School and Jesse Boyd Elementary School for 32 years. Jack also taught Adult Education through Spartanburg County Education Association for 10 years. During the summers, Jack managed Thompson Peach Packing House for a number of years. After retiring from education he owned Combs Lawn Service which he operated with his children for numerous years. He was an avid Clemson fan and was a member of IPTAY. For many years, he bred different breeds of hunting dogs and participated in Field Trials. Jack was a member of American Legion Post #48 in Chesnee, SC and in 2015 received the prestigious Korean Ambassador of Peace Medal from the Korean Consulate for his service in the Korean Conflict. Jack touched the lives of many and truly made the world a better place. He will be missed by all who knew him. Left to enjoy his memories are his wife of 53 years, Mary-Jo Cudd Combs; a son, Marc William Combs and wife Nicole of Chesnee, SC, a daughter, Jacquelyn Combs Thompson and husband Chris of Chesnee, SC, and a daughter, Julie Combs Hunt and husband Ray of Chapin, SC; grandchildren, Raymond Davis Hunt, Jr. of Morgantown, WV, Ellery Shannon Hunt of Orlando, FL, Evan Matthew, Blaine Daniel and Brenden Mark Thompson of Chesnee, SC, and Jack Maxwell Combs of Chesnee, SC; and numerous very special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a grandchild, Christopher Evan Thompson; brothers, Dwight, Worth, Marvin, Fred, Bryant, and Blaine Combs; sisters, Ruth Combs Blanton, Reba Combs Propst, Pauline Combs Dotson, and Betty Combs Norman; and nephews, Jimmy Combs and Eddie Blanton. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 PM Friday, February 3, 2017, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 4, 2017, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, by the Rev. Dr. Alastair Walker, the Rev. Kenny McDowell, and eulogist Ms. Pam Howard. Burial, with military rites, will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
