J. Locke, Sr.

J. Wofford Locke Sr., 83, loving husband of the late Betty S. Locke, died Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born September 4, 1927, in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Joe Greene and Merle Wofford Locke. Wofford was a dedicated member of Bethel United Methodist Church for 61 years. He was a member of the H. F. Chreitzberg Sunday School Class. A veteran of the U. S. Navy, he participated in "Operation Crossroads" in 1945-1946. He was a public tax accountant for many years with Lee, Broom, MacBay and Associates. Survivors include his daughter, Alice L. DeLamar of Conway, SC; his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph W. and Debbie Locke of Spartanburg; four grandchildren, Benjamin and Chrissie DeLamar and Jordan and Daniel Locke; two great-grandchildren, Mykayla and Brentley DeLamar; and his sisters and their families, Sarah Anne Cudd and Cherry Murph. He was predeceased by his sister and her husband Vivian and Milton McBride; and a brother, Dewey Locke. Visitation will be 1:00-1:45 PM Saturday, May 7, 2011 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM in the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David E. Nichols and the Rev. David B. Smith. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church (Sanctuary Choir or Youth Mission Fund), 245 S Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29306; or the Betty Strider Locke Music Scholarship Fund, c/o Spartanburg County Foundation, 424 East Kennedy St., Spartanburg, SC 29302..
