James David Knox, 87, of Duncan, died Saturday, October 1, 2011, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born December 3, 1923, in the Whitestone community, he was the son of the late William Arthur and Ammie Louise Smith Knox. Mr. Knox was owner and operator of the Western Auto of Lyman, member of Lyman United Methodist Church and a WWII veteran of the Navy "Seabees". He loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved boating on his pontoon boat on Lake Murray; was a great gardener, known for his generous nature, great smile, sense of humor; and was loved by all who met him. Survivors include his wife, Frances Ruth Kirby Knox; three daughters, Jane (Tommy) Hawkins of Fort Mill, Kay (Mark) Sims of Piedmont, and Lynn (Jerry) Gibson of Lyman; five grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one great-grandson. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family of five. Visitation will be 12:45-1:45 PM Tuesday, October 4, 2011, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow 2:00 PM in the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Brian Gilmer, Rev. Dr. William Pate, Jr., and Mr. Shannon Gibson. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Complex. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
