Irene Layman

Irene Marie Smith Layman, 90, of Spartanburg, died Sunday, December 23, 2012, at her home. Born May 2, 1922, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Florence Steller Smith. She was a graduate of Cass Technical School in Detroit, MI and was a member of Morningside Baptist Church. An artist in oil painting, she was formerly a volunteer art teacher and spent a lifetime doing volunteer work for Red Cross Hospitals in Detroit, MI and at various blood banks. She was a water safety instructor for the Red Cross and for several years was a foster mother. Mrs. Layman is survived by her devoted husband, Floyd Arthur Layman; her daughters, Christine Marie Leet and her husband, Duane, of Landrum, SC and Donna May Thom and her husband, Bruce of Dryden, MI; 4 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 2:00-2:45 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2012, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m, in the chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Kirk H. Neely and Mr. Kenneth Page. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Grand Blanc, MI.
